  • corn gluten (stop weeds before they start)

    • Corn gluten meal is a powdery byproduct of the corn milling process. Corn gluten meal products offer a non-toxic, yet effective alternative to traditional, chemical-based weed and feed products for weed control in gardens and lawns, paths and driveways. As a weed suppressant, corn gluten acts as a natural “pre-emergent” - it inhibits seed germination by drying out a seed as soon as it cracks open to sprout. One application effectively suppresses weeds for 4 - 6 weeks. Timing is essential in the use of corn gluten meal. It must be applied before the targeted weed emerges above the soil. Effects are cumulative. Results improve with repeated use over time, consider adding corn gluten to your monthly maintenance package.

    • Mulch acts as an effective weed barrier, but because it is biodegradable, over time it does break down into the soil.     • Application of fertilizer in early spring encourages vigorous leafy growth and the production of flowers, followed by fruit. In Manitoba’s climate zone, early spring may run the risk of a late freeze or even snow, which can harm new growth forced by fertilizing. We may therefore perform the general spring cleanup, and then return to apply fertilizer when the risk of frost has passed.
